Statement by the Prove They Are Alive! campaign on the UN Human Rights Committee decision on Ogulsapar Muradovas case

The United Nations Human Rights Committee (HRC) has found the Turkmen government responsible for the torture and death of a human rights activist, the Prove They are Alive Campaign! said today. The activist, Olgusapar Muradova died in state custody in 2006, after her arrest and trial on politically motivated charges.

Turkmenistan was also ordered to provide the family with a full account of its investigations, including the autopsy, copies of trial transcripts, and the court verdict. The government should also take all steps to prevent similar violations.

In a grim indictment of Turkmenistans notoriously dire human rights record, the United Nations Human Rights Committee has found the government there responsible for the torture and death in custody after an unfair trial of Ogulsapar Muradova, a journalist and human rights activist who died in prison in September 2006.

Muradova had been a member and cofounder of the Turkmenistan Helsinki Foundation, an independent human rights group based in Bulgaria, and was also a reporter for the Turkmen service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. She was arrested over her human rights work >>

Citizens of Turkmenistan are definitely allowed to leave the country, its immigration service insisted in a statement in mid-April. The declaration came in response to reports that men under the age of 30 were being prevented from boarding international flights. But in recent weeks reports have begun emerging again of men as old as 40 not being allowed to travel abroad. The authorities are so desperate to stem emigration, it seems, that they are simply stopping their countrymen from getting on planes.
